Bakersfield, Kern County
Oil has shaped Bakersfield since 1899, when a hand-dug well struck crude along the Kern River just north of town. The Kern River Oil Field that grew from it has produced for well over a century, and pumping units still nod across the bluffs. Kern County remains the leading oil-producing county in California.
